Premier League Headlines: Mejbri Suspended for Misconduct; City Boss Insists 'Back Line Must Get Better'

From the world of top-flight developments, a notable midfielder has been issued a substantial suspension, a manager has pointed to a defender's errors to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline improvements after a chaotic victory.

Mejbri Given Four-Match Suspension and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was given a four-game suspension and a ÂŁ15,000 penalty following improper behaviour during October's match against Leeds United. The Football Association said Mejbri was referred a separate disciplinary panel after an incident of spitting in the direction of away supporters around the 67-minute mark during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.

A statement explained: “An independent disciplinary panel has sanctioned Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions in the top-flight match against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that he behaved in breach of the laws of football or in a poor way and/or using offensive and indecent conduct by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United fans.”

It added, “Mejbri subsequently admitted the charge, with the panel handing down a four-game suspension and a fine after proceedings. The panel's full explanation for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” Burnley, currently in 19th place in the standings, travel to 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.

Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Make a Point

The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is not an issue at team, pointing out that defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing a bad game in the defeat against Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful team in the Premier League, does not feel that mentality was a factor in their setback. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, the oldest player in the lineup, who delivered an error-strewn display in central defence.

“We always talk about a lack of experience after we drop points,” the coach stated. “When we beat Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, no one was talking about experienced players. I understand that when we don’t win, we are constantly searching for an explanation, but in my view why we lost to Leeds is not because of the experience, it’s because we just weren't at our best.”

He added, “Who is the most senior player for us on the pitch? Who was? Was he any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It's that those 11 players, they were simply not good enough.”

3. Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Improve'

The Manchester City manager has stated his team have learnt from their recent thriller against Fulham and the episode is now forgotten. The team held on to claim a 5-4 victory in a remarkable encounter on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with almost an hour gone.

This followed they resisted a Leeds comeback and won 3-2 in the previous game, it raised more questions regarding if they possess resilient required to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” Guardiola commented. “Good learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to learn from both good and bad in the good things and results and think of what's next.”

“Of course I am worried,” he admitted. “We try to analyse the cause, to not concede the goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and five by Fulham you can see our sides, correct? So, always we have done plenty of positive things. Yet the number of shots on target did Leeds have? Three? Scored two. It’s not bad. How many attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded we can see too high. We must improve.”

Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Contracts

The Magpies' recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a deal extending to 2029 with an option until 2030.

This allows Wilson free to prioritise talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. Livramento's agreement set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, Newcastle's talks have assumed some urgency.

“The initial three or four days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was much better than the one I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that the club wishes to renew Tino’s contract and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”

Manager Eddie Howe will be without Botman against the home game against Burnley on Saturday, with the defender likely to remain out for another week.

Nuno Confirms PaquetĂĄ Returns Against Brighton

The Hammers' manager Nuno EspĂrito Santo has stated that Lucas PaquetĂĄ is back to the starting lineup when they face Brighton this Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.

“It is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am confident it will not be repeated because he himself acknowledged his mistake. We spoke internally. I believe it is over and it will not be repeated.”

He also understands the intense strain on his side, currently 18th ahead of Saturday's matches. “We can't ignore it,” he admitted. “It's a reality. We must face it. We're battling for survival. We can't shy away from it.”

6. Arteta Impressed by Striker Stand-in Merino

The Spanish midfielder could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite their regular frontmen are fit again. Merino has been playing as an emergency number nine because of fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He scored Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second during a 2-0 victory that maintained {their|
