The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
