Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A senior political figure said the attack made him speechless and required to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
